This long skinny region east of Adelaide is best known for producing high quality Chardonnay and Pinot Noir - with particularly fine examples from its high elevation subzones Piccadilly Valley and Lenswood. Chardonnay really shines here with great tension, focus and depth of fruit - and it is also often used for their sparkling wines. The small artisan wineries spread across this large region also produce interesting examples of Sauvignon Blanc and Shiraz. This region is a hub of experimentation with a mix of established names and a new generation of young winemakers pushing the boundaries - also growing unusual grapes (eg. Whilst Eden is well known for its Riesling and Viognier and Barossa is known for its Shiraz and Grenache - there is a wealth of other grape varieties to explore in Barossa. For whites, Semillon, Grenache Gris, Roussanne to Clairette - and Cinsault, Mourvedre, Nero d'Avola, Touriga Nacional and Cabernet Sauvignon for reds.
