Super Tuscan is a term used to describe high quality red Tuscan wines which are made entirely or partly from non-native grapes such as Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Merlot and Syrah.  It has been used since early 1970s – and the first wines to break the mould were Sassicaia and Tignanello – but today many producers across the region are creating blends from non-indigenous grapes and producing a wide variety of styles within Tuscany from coastal Bolgheri to southern Maremma.
