Romania has a vast number of vineyards (more than Australia), many of which are based between the northern banks of the Danube and the southern slopes of the Carpathian mountains.  With its strong French influence, there are plenty of Chardonnays and Pinot Noirs here – but the native Feteasca Neagra red grape (meaning Black Maiden) is very characterful.

This spicy full bodied red was hugely popular with tasters at our recent Danube tasting.  Crunchy red fruits, smoky herby undertones, soft tannins, but still vibrant and fresh: a traditional local grape made using modern winemaking.  This would suit those who usually drink Merlot or Shiraz.  A bargain under £10.
